Forever 21 in the Motherland

The thought of a Forever 21 launch party in Seoul is so strange to me on a couple of levels. First of all, as I mentioned previously, Seoul is basically one large Forever 21. You can find similar fashion items (if not the same exact thing with a different tag) for a fraction of the price in Edae, Kangnam, or Dongdaemun. Secondly, I still remember when Forever 21 was just a step above Rave or Jean's Warehouse, a place to buy your clubbing outfit for under $20. Now's it's become the mecca of the budget fashionista.

You have to admire the founders of Forever 21 for seeing the potential in Korean manufactured fashions and their ability to make it appeal to the American Mall demographic (i.e., Asian Americans).

Speaking of malls, Forever 21 had yet to open before I left, but I did see the Coming Soon signs at the newly built M Plaza (located right next to the Body Shop). I'm calling it. In about ten years, Myeongdong is going to become one big shopping mall. Yeah, I'm talking American style. Who knows? It may even have a Cinnabon and an Orange Julius.

Perhaps malls do not fit with the "here today, gone tomorrow" model of many small retailers in Seoul, but I think Korean consumers will quickly become accustomed to large, somewhat organized merchandise displays and air condintioning.

Mark my words.
(And if I'm wrong, I'm going to blame the economic woes of 2008)

I'll see you in December, Forever 21 Myeongdong.
If you're still there, that is...

I hope Myeong-dong doesnt become one big mall!!! :(

I think thats what's so cool about Seoul is the way there are shopping districts like Myeong-dong with the stores in the first couple floors of buildings. Otherwise it will turn into like department stores in Korea. I like the outside "street" atmosphere in Myeong-dong! :)

Usually I'm a lurker, but I have to say......

This post cracked me up b/c my friend's mum is the manager of it. =D;; I went to the opening weekend to support him, and accidentally saw the Brown Eyed Girls performing..... except I had not clue who they were at the time.

Anyways, the Korea Forever21 is nice, but the quality of the clothing is still a little =\.

Calm down. Call me stupid, but do not blame my nationality.

I do not need to restate anything, because it's my blog. In fact, I should ignore your comment, but I do not like being called stupid. Only my mother can call me stupid and that's because she gave birth to me.

I was not implying that the entire nation lacks air conditioning. I was simply stating that Korea does not really have anything resembling what we stupid Americans call a "mall", which is characterized by air conditioning and Orange Julius. Look around at all the street vendors in Myeongdong. I don't recall seeing any air conditioning hanging over their tables.

That is all.

When getting off the Myeong-dong subway station, in which direction is Forever 21, and how far away is it? please help me out!!! :)

Directions courtesy of my cousin Cyndi:
Line 4 exit 5? (The exit next to Migliore) as you exit the stairs turn left and head straight down the busy street. Passing Cafe Pascucci on the left keep heading straight and eventually you should hit the Forever 21 building on the right hand side.

(It's in a large, glossy indoor complex called the M plaza, near the Body Shop.
